Seagulls School Early Education Center

The Early Education Center is Hawaii's largest and most conveniently located childcare center. Constructed by the City and County of Honolulu it has been operated by Seagull Schools since it opened in 1986.

The Early Education Center is open to the public. You do not need to be a government employee to enroll your child and children in diapers are welcome.

The school is licensed for 264 children aged 18 months to 5 years by the Department of Human Services and is among the elite centers accredited by the NAEYC. Located in the heart of Honolulu's capital and business district, the center resembles a beautifully landscaped village that is an oasis of green amongst the City's high-rise buildings.

Our fully enclosed facility is surrounded by grassy playgrounds and tall shady trees. Our location affords us the benefits of being able to walk on short excursions to the State library, City Hall, the State Capital and all the park areas that surround the school. For an additional fee, special classes that include hula, music and golf instruction are offered as extra activities as well as swimming lessons during the summer.

Through participation in the Department of Agriculture Child Food Program, the school provides a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack served family style, which allows children to serve themselves and develop additional skills and responsibilities that meet U.S.D.A. guidelines. Food should NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL with children unless it is part of a special diet or due to allergies.

The center has a "No Candies" policy. Parents are not allowed to send cakes or candy to school.

Monthly excursions away from the center are planned as part of the curriculum, as well as on-campus special events with musicians, puppeteers, and storytellers. All are very hands-on, fun and educational.

The school's nine classrooms are each divided into smaller groups that allow for individualized attention. The highly qualified teaching staff is supported by an administrative staff that includes the school director, a curriculum specialist and two office personnel. This allows the teaching staff to focus their attention on the needs of the children and to get support services when needed.

The school has a PTA that demonstrates its desire to work in collaboration with parents to provide an important connection between home and school. The PTA provides the school with a variety of special events such as Chinese Lion Dancers and Taiko Drummers and a yearly Spring Carnival. They also do an annual fundraiser that supports the purchase of classroom materials and outdoor equipment.

A unique feature of our school is on-campus security. Uncle John is at the front gate during the morning and afternoon drop off and pick-up times. He provides a warm welcome to the school and also directs visitors to the office.

The Early Education Center also has several community organizations that collaborate with the school. The Foster Grandparents Program provides seniors to the classrooms to work one-on-one with the children and McKinley High School students interested in the teaching profession get practical experience. Interns from University of Hawaii Family Resource program and Honolulu Community College Early Childhood program also participate in activities.

The school's hours and days of operation are scheduled to meet the needs of working parents. It is open all year round except for holidays.

Visitors are always welcome.
